Health Tips - Get Better Sleep
May 15, 2008
Sleep deprivation is very common in our society. Sleep deprivation is defined as the lack of necessary sleep. As college students, professors and staff, a lack of sleep can play havoc on our minds and bodies.
A lack of sleep affects more then just our minds. According to a study in the British Medical Journal, sleep deprivation can affect motor skills, increase levels of stress, anxiety and depression, reduce brain activity and increase risks of obesity.
Before you go to sleep, take some time, about 15 minutes, to wind down. You wouldn’t park a car without first braking, so jumping into bed without winding down doesn’t seem fit. Take a few minutes to meditate, clear your mind, then climb into bed.
In the college dorm room, the beds usually aren’t the most comfortable. When someone can’t sleep, a room can feel like a torture chamber. Try to find a new location; even if it’s just for a night, move. Staying in one place can be counterproductive, and will draw from you sleep.
Be careful though, napping can reduce your drive for nighttime sleep. Napping does not reduce the need for real sleep. The need then is to nap early and short, no longer than 40 minutes.
With only six weeks left in the semester, everyone is going to be crunched for time. Take the time to take care of your mind and you will perform better.
